A recent update to McAfee's virus checker flagged legitimate Windows files as infected with a serious virus. False positives (as they are known) are reasonably common, but when it happens to a Windows file that is instrumental to the operation of the operating system itself it can cause real problems. Which is exactly what has happened in this case. McAfee flagged SVCHOST.EXE as malware and removed/quarantined the file which caused Windows to repeatedly crash. McAfee has promised to compensate those people who incurred professional fix costs. |
