From the PreyProject website: Prey lets you keep track of your phone or laptop at all times, and will help you find it if it ever gets lost or stolen. It's lightweight, open source software, and free for anyone to use. And it just works. There is a great story here about a Prey user tracking his stolen laptop across town from thousands of miles away. Essentially you install Prey and it runs with a low impact memory footprint (for Windows users - in the background for a logged in user) and checks periodically that a trigger URL (that you own) is still in place. If your laptop is lost or stolen, then remove the URL (say delete a blog post or any URL you control), Prey then uses this as a trigger to start reporting its (the laptops) position to you and can take pictures through the web cam. Hopefully, the information that is relayed back to you will enable you to recover the laptop. Pretty cool .... works on android phones too (an SMS triggers the reports) with an iPhone version under development. |
